The denominator is how many pieces the fraction has altogether and it goes on the bottom half of the fraction. For example, if you have nine apples altogether, that will be the denominator of your fraction. If two of them are green, that will be your numerator. A fraction is a set of numbers that has a numerator the numerator is the top number that represents how much of thin there is and the denominator is the bottom number that represents how many thing there is in all. For example if you were trying to find out how many of the animals were monkeys were there in all and you had 5 animals a 2 of them are monkeys then your fraction would be 2/5 2 of them are monkeys and there are 5 animals in all .We have been doing a lot with fractions. I will tell you two things I know about fractions. One of them is, breaking a fraction down into simplest form. Too break a fraction down into simplest form you have to divide. For example, the fraction is 4 12ths. First you have to figure out how many times 4 goes into 12. It goes in 3 times because 4 times 3 equals 12. Next you figure out how many times 4 goes into 4. 4 goes into 4, 1 time because 4 times 1 equals 4.Last you have to break your fraction down. You take the multiplication 4 times 3 equals 12. You use the 3 as your numerator. Then you take your multiplication 4 times 1 equals 4 and make your denominator 4. The second thing I will tell you about is changing a mixed number into an improper fraction. First you multiply. For example, your mixed number is 4 and 1 half. First you multiply 4 and 2. Which equals 8. Last you have to add the numerator, which is 1. 8 plus 1 equals 9. Your denominator stays the same and it is 2. So your improper fraction is 9 2's. To make an improper fraction a whole, our fraction is 20/8 to make it in a whole number you need to know how many times 8 will go in to 20. It will go in to 20 2 times. Now we need to figure out how much is left. So if 8 times 2 is 16 then we need to subtract 20-16 witch equal’s 4. So our whole fraction is 2 and 4/8. Now we are going to reduce just the fraction part. First we have to figure what numbers will go into each other. We need to use the biggest number we can. The biggest number is 4, the number 4 will go into it 1 time so now we need to figure out how many times 4 will go into 8. It will go into 8 2 times. So our fraction is 2 and ½.
